TRAINING the TRAINERS

COVID-19 pandemic has gripped 215 countries across the globe and many of these faced lockdowns. Academia was among the first few sectors that faced rapid shut down were schools and higher education institutions. Millions of students are affected by the complete halt to academic operations.  Subsequently the lockdown triggered significant changes, imposing many challenges in the education community globally. After about four months of the commencement of the global crisis, it was realized that we need to find solutions for this crisis. Due to the suspension of classroom teaching in all schools, colleges and universities, a switch to the online teaching was the only option. This form of learning minimized contact between students themselves or between the students and teachers, however, majority of students and teachers were totally new to this digital mode of education. New online teaching methods were established in academia, which were considered suitable for the present generation of learners.

The world has to get prepared for dealing with the ongoing pandemic and the changed society post COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, IRDAS wants to focus on “Training the Trainers” i.e., develop the skills of teachers so that they are able to confidently handle the changing environment of the digital classroom. Teachers at all levels were suddenly thrown into a situation that many of them were totally unprepared for, with little knowledge of how to conduct a webinar, handle discipline and attendance or assess student online. They were scrambling to keep up with their usual class load under difficult circumstances.

Taking these challenges into consideration IRDAS has compiled a series of short sessions to better equip teachers. These are meant for both government and private high school teachers to improve their quality of instruction which will equip them to impart desired knowledge and skills to students of classes 9-12.

This 6-week course will train 300 teachers in 6 months taking small groups of 12-15 teachers/ batch:

· better lesson preparation

· managing a group in an online class

· monitoring student progress

· knowledge of the digital technology

· use of multi -media resources

· communicating and presenting skills

· Appropriate assessment techniques

The course is designed for in-service teachers and offers individual mentoring.

Sessions will be held twice a week, 2 hours /day over a period of 6 weeks, with one orientation session in the beginning and a feedback and review at the end of the course.

Teachers and sponsoring organizations are requested to honour the commitment to attend and complete the course for improving the standard of current academics in our state/country.

This project spread its wings in the year 2019 and the online Training the Trainers started in the year 2021. We feel that this will greatly help to improve the quality of the classes and certainly will help to engage the trainers in a productive learning experience. As a result, it can only enhance the quality of education at the organization as a whole, in addition to upskilling the individual teacher.
